Change a Flat Tire

Knowing how to take care of your car while on the side of the road with a flat tire is essential for every driver. Roadside assistance may be on the way, but sometimes it can take over an hour for them to arrive. You can change the tire faster than that yourself, even if you don’t know how. Here’s how to change a flat tire before roadside assistance gets there:

  • Step 1: Pull to the side of the road (preferably on a flat, straight surface) and get out your jack, wrench, and spare tire.
  • Step 2: Pop off your hubcap and start loosening each lug nut. Don’t remove them altogether and keep the car on the ground for leverage.
  • Step 3:Once the lug nuts are loose, raise the car about six inches using your jack. Your owner’s manual will tell you the recommended spot to place the jack.
  • Step 4: Remove the lug nuts and store them in a safe place so you don’t lose them then remove the flat tire by pulling out from the car.
  • Step 5: Line up the hole in the spare tire and push towards the car as far as it will go and begin replacing each bolt.
  • Step 6: Lower the car back to the ground and tighten the lug nuts, replacing the hubcap.

Once you complete all of these steps, your spare tire will be set to go! Make sure you remember to take your car into a mechanic to get it replaced as soon as possible.
